非线性系数α 值很小。在金属氧化物阀片中通过1mA~10kA这个范围内电流时,α 值一般在0.02~0.06之间。在额定电压作用下,通过的电流极小,因此可以做成无间隙避雷器。保护性能好。它不需要间隙动作,电压一旦升高,即可迅速吸收过电压能量,抑制过电压的发展;有良好的陡度响应特性;无间隙的氧化物避雷器的性能几乎不受温度、湿度、气压、污秽等环境条件的影响,因而性能稳定。

通流容量大。避雷器容易吸收能量,没有串联间隙的制约,仅与阀片本身的强度有关。同碳化硅阀片比较,氧化物阀片单位面积的通流能力大4~4.5倍。因此,用这样的阀片制成避雷器,不但可以限制大气过电压,而且完全可以用来限制操作过电压,甚至还可以耐受一定持续时间的短时(工频)过电压。
