防雷避雷器内部安装有对电压敏感变化的非线性元件。例如压敏电阻，在低于它的开启工作电压范围内它就是一只断开的开关，呈现高阻抗挂接在电路上不影响电路的正常工作（实际上它会带来几十μA的漏电流）。

一般情况下在防雷避雷器的前面还安装有快速熔断保险管，如果雷电流太大保险管就会被熔断彻底断开电器设备的连接实现更加完美放心的保护。

目前防雷避雷器里面安装的保护元件主要是压敏电阻、放电管和瞬态抑制二极管三种非线性元件，它们的电气性能和技术指标上各有优缺点，应该根据电路要求，使用场合以及保护对象来进行选用。

一般放电管用于信号端的保护，比如电信交换机的众多端口都是安装有放电管；压敏电阻用于电源端的保护。瞬态抑制二极管由于价格较高适宜于二者的补充应用。比如瞬态抑制二极管较之压敏电阻，它的漏电流小得多；瞬态抑制二极管较之放电管，响应时间快些也没有所谓的续流效应；但是它的功率容量比较小，防护能力比二者都小很多。
